What Are Compressor V-Belts and When Should They Be Replaced?

On a belt-driven piston compressor, the v-belt transmits power from the electric motor to the pump. It is a wear item and one of the most common reasons a compressor stops making air.

Signs a belt needs attention

Inspect with the machine isolated and the belt guard removed:

  • Visible cracking, glazing or fraying on the belt
  • Slipping, squealing or a burning smell on start-up
  • Excessive deflection when pressed at the midpoint
  • Rubber dust collecting inside the belt guard

Tension and alignment matter

A belt that is too loose slips and overheats; too tight and it loads the pump and motor bearings. Pulley alignment should be checked at the same time.

Refit the guard

Never run a compressor with the belt guard removed. Force Air supplies both v-belts and replacement belt guards.
